This is combined with intricata by some authors, but it appears to be a relatively distinct segregate with narrower leaf bases and fewer lobes. The taxon is largely restricted to central and southern Appalachian regions, but also reported from the Knobs of s. Ind. (D). Variety status may be preferable. Lance (2014) treated both this taxon and C. horseyi E.J. Palmer as separate varieties of intricata, but noted that they might be combined.
