Fabaceae <F-Trifolieae> Trifolium <Lotoidea> hybridum
Trifolium hybridum L.
ALI: EU HAB: R-10, ::::, D, 6? ABU: n/a, n/a, 5
Although this short-lived alien perennial ("alsike clover") was tried for forage production in Ky. ca. 1894-1914, it did not prove useful (Gm). However, since then it has spread widely into farmland and roadsides around the state. T. hybridum can be confused with the native winter annual, reflexum. It has shorter calyx lobes (1.7-2.5 mm versus 3-7 mm), scarious-membranaceous stipules (versus foliaceous), and glabrate foliage (versus villosulous to glabrate); these characters are shared with the long-lived stoloniferous species, repens.
