This is widely scattered across southeastern states, especially on the Coastal Plain and in the Ozark-Ouachita region (K). However, it is generally restricted to good remnants of native grassland. North of Ky. Buchnera occurs only in a few counties of s. Ohio and locally on the south side of the Great Lakes in n. Ill. to w. N.Y. (K). In Ky. most records are from non-calcareous soils, but the species is associated with calcareous soils elsewhere (W). In addition to verified colls. from southern regions of the state, there is an old report from the JEFF area (McMurtrie 1819).
