This largely Appalachian species is typically associated with beech forest on medium-acid soils (2n = 18). It is virtually absent west of the Cliff Section and eastern Knobs. A few plants have been found in JESS on terraces along the Ky. Rv. Palisades (Campbell & Meijer 1989).
