This is widespread across eastern and central North America, but it has not been recognized in some manuals; see notes under canadensis. There may be some intergradation with canadensis in Ky., and there appear to be occasional hybrids with gigantea (e.g. from MCLE at EKY). Insect galls are common on altissima, but rare on canadensis and gigantea (as cited in Y).
