Mapping is provisional; implicatum and perhaps praecocius may need to be separated with more care. D. lanuginosum ranges widely across humid temperate regions of North America (FNA 25). Within Ky. it is clearly the most common segregate of section Lanuginosa, but there is considerable variation. Thomas (2015) indicated that lanuginosum is most similar to implicatum and praecocius. This group of three differs from the longiligulatum-lindheimeri complex as follows: hairs on stems and leaves, if present, are relatively long (mostly 0.3-5 mm versus 0.1-0.3 mm); largest vernal leaves larger (4-11 cm long versus 2-7 cm; spikelets not puberulent (versus often so). Included here are colls. that were previously treated as P. huachucae Ashe (a less robust form) or P. tennesseense Ashe (with relatively glabrous foliage). There may be intergradation with implicatum, meridionale, columbianum, villosissimum, dichotomum, laxiflorum and others (FNA 25).
