This shrubby scrambler is a common weed in more northeastern regions, but in Ky. it is generally rare and limited to northern counties. It was reported as early as 1893 (Pr) and 1914 (Gm). No varieties are recognized, but the species contains a polyploid series; 2n = 24 (as in many Solanaceae), 48 and 72.
