This occurs mostly on damp acid soils in states east of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, and is concentrated in mid-Atlantic states (FNA 24, K). There are only about three sites currently known in Ky. Hybrids with obtusata (senso lato) have been reported across its range, but see note on pallens under intermedia.
