There are two old colls. of var. setaceum from Ky.: Kearney #386 in 1893 from BELL (US) and Braun #299 in 1931 from LETC (US, "dominant in meadow above Eolia Jct."). See notes under the closely related var. longepedunculatum. Var. setaceum differs only as follows (FNA 25): leaves mostly cauline (versus basally concentrated); blades conspicuously hirsute (versus glabrous exceot for ciliate margins). Spikelets are similar but average slightly larger (1.4-1.9 x 1.1-1.6 mm versus 1.4-1.8 x 0.9-1.3 mm). Together vars. longepedunculatum and setaceum differ from vars. ciliatifolium and muhlenbergii as follows: spikelets 1.4-1.9 x 0.9-1.6 mm (versus 1.7-2.5 x 1.2-2 mm), wuth upper florets 1.3-2 mm long (versus 1.7-2.3 mm) ; leaf blades often basal (versus cauline), up to 15-22 cm long and 10 mm wide (versus 25-32 cm and 18 mm). Var. setaceum is also close to var. stramineum; see notes under that name.
