This taxon has generally been treated as no more than an awned form of frondosa, but it deserves further attention. In Ky. it is known only from the Mississippian Embayment, and in Mo. it is widely scattered (St). It appears somewhat intermediate between frondosa and bushii, suggesting potential origin from hybrids.
