This is reported to be centered in more northern regions than var. isocycla. P. verticillata, as generally defined, is a variable species that needs further analysis (W). It is a diminutive annual that occurs in a variety of open habitats, especially on bare ground, but often in open woods as well as full sun. Plants vary much in stature (ca. 2-20 cm tall) and flowering date (Jun to Sep).
