This occurs in northeastern regions and the Appalachians, with little in Ohio and almost none in Ind. (K); reports from Ark. are erroneous (W). Chromosome numbers can range from 2n = 16 to 38 (FNA 4). Distinction from virginica is often difficult and may be impossible in some cases, based on morphology alone (FNA 4, W): leaves are 3-11 cm long (versus 5-20 cm) and 1-3 cm wide (versus 0.1-2 cm), abruptly petiolate (versus gradually tapering) with L/W 2.5-8 (versus 8-20+). Stems tend to be shorter (5-25 cm versus 5-40 cm), but from tubers with periderm 1-5 mm thick (versus 0-0.5 mm). Flowers are generally indistinguishable, although sepals tend to be shorter (ca. 3-5 mm versus 5-7 mm).The remarkable disjunct coll. from WARR (WK) appears to be correctly identified: D. Cummings #12, 25 Mar 1970, slopes above Drakes Cr. ca 100 yds. off Scottsville Rd., ca 6 mi S of Bowling Green. K also maps the species from HANC, based on source to be determined.
