This differs from var. interior in its slightly larger calyx (suggesting transition to triflora), with more attenuate lobes (2.5-4 mm long versus 1.5-3 mm); see Wherry (1955), F and W for details. It appears to be largely centered on the Piedmont further east (Va., N.C. & S.C.), disjunct from var. interior. Wherry (1929-34) did initially map this taxon in MARS and MCRA, and F indicated a broad southern range including w. Ky. However, these and other reports of var. glaberrima or var. melampyrifolia (Salisb.) Wherry may be erroneous (M. Recent analysis of DNA has suppported the distinction of var. glaberrima from var. interior but the overall distinction of these two taxa from carolina sensu lato remains unclear (Garner et al. 2022).
