This is a southeastern variety, most common on the Coastal Plain (FNA 23, W). Distinction from var. crinita is not clear in some cases, and there may be intermediate plants. Var. brevicrinis is reported to differ as follows: perigynia strongly obovoid (versus ellipsoid to slightly obovoid), 3-4.5 mm long x 2-3 mm wide (versus 2-3.5 x 1-2 mm); achene symmetrical versus usually shortened on one side, slightly to strongly asymmetrical). There is no clear distinction in range or habitat within Ky.
