Mapping is provisional. These records form an assemblage of plants that are siimilar to R. terranigrae J.J.N. Campb. & Seymour, but with leaves more spreading, less clustered along the stem, smaller on average, and usually deep glossy green (versus pale yellowish green or often bluish-black when dried); heads often multiple, usually opening more or less together in early to mid-Aug (versus usually solitary at first but adding more until mid-Sep), These plants occur mostly on seasonally damp but rocky glades in the southern Interior Low Plateaus of Ala., Tenn. and Ky.; there are also apparent disjunctions in central, Ga., central S.Car. and southern Ohio (Campbell & Seymour 2013). The small cluster of potential records from Ky. (MONR, EDMO, GRAY, TODD) is intriguing, perhaps linked with the cluster in central Tenn. However, no colls. have been found from the Bluegrass or Knobs of Ky. and Ind. The disjunct Ohio plants deserve more investigation to determine if they form another cryptic taxon.
