Mapping is provisional. This species occurs widely in acid soils in forests of eastern states, largely south of glaciated land. Var. elliptica reportedly has a more eastern range than var. hirsuta, though there is much overlap (F). In Ky. these taxa may not be clearly distinct in some cases, but var. elliptica appears restricted to Appalachian regions. Further study of colls. is needed for precise mapping.
