In addition to M . neglecta, two closely related Eurasian species with relatively small flowers are also expected, especially in western or southern regions: M. pusilla Smith (= M. rotundifolia L.), and M. parviflora L. A coll. of pusilla from FAYE has been reported, but its identify has not been verified: E.M. & E.T. Browne #4189 (1961-05-28 at MEM); compared to neglecta, pusilla has smaller flowers, with petals 3-6 mm long (versus 6-13 mm), about as long as sepals (versus twice as long), and mature mericarps strongly rugose-reticulate (versus slightly roughened or obscurely reticulate). BA also reported parviflora, but no coll. has been found; it also has small petals (up to 3-5 mm long) that are relatively pale, and it has more narrowly linear bractlets (W).
