This Eurasian tetraploid (2n = 26-30) was introduced for pasture in North or South Dakota, and is now widely distributed in those and adjacent states, but it remains virtually unknown in eastern North America (K, FNA 24). The species has been collected once in Ky., on a revegetated stripmine in BELL (BEREA; Thompson & Thieret 1986). The plant may have been a waif with other planted seed. It appears to be associated with generally more acid soils than pratensis.
