This robust small-grain ("white millet") is an ancient domesticate from Southern Asia or Africa, and is closely related to crus-galli (FNA 25). It is often used in bird-seed, including extensive sowings for waterfowl (Ahn et al. 2004). Colls. from Ky. may represent occasional waifs after cultivation, rather than truly naturalized populations. A closely related cultivar with darker spikelets and more bristly rachises is sometimes treated as a distinct species, E. esculenta (A. Braun) H. Scholtz ("Japanese millet"); 2n = 54 versus 36. That plant is also sown for wildlife in southern states (FNA 25), but there is no known naturalization in Ky.
