This has a northeastern to midwestern range, and is rare or unknown across most of s. Ky. and Tenn. (Ch). There has been some confusion with tribuloides, which shares narrow perigynia, winged sheaths, broad blades, robust vegetative shoots, and 2n = 70 (FNA 23). C. cristatella has distinctively globose spikes with lower perigynia spreading to recurved.
