This was originally native to eastern and central North America, but is now a cosmopolitan weed. It often forms mats in roadbeds or other trampled or driven areas. See Y and notes here under other species in the genus, which are often confused. Leaves are relatively dark green, often with a dark reddish spot; 2n = 28.
