Aceraceae [Sapindaceae] Acer <Saccharina> saccharum var. schneckii (?rugellii)
Acer saccharum Marsh. var. schneckii Rehd.
ALI: no HAB: 5,11?, n/a, D, 1 ABU: g8?, s8?, -2
Mapping is tentative; most or all records might be combined with typical saccharum. Var. schneckii is distinguished by W as folllows (see also St, Y): leaves pubescent across the surface, often densely so, the hairs typically upright or tangled (versus glabrous or pubescent only along the veins, the hairs appressed and straight); leaves sparingly lobed and with more rounded lobe tips (versus strongly lobed and sublobed, the lobes with more attenuated but ultimately rounded) tips). Some of the trees mapped here may just be transitional from typical saccharum to floridanum or perhaps nigrum. Var. schneckii is reportedly centered in midwestern regions, but even there it may not be clearly distinct. Unusual forms with small leaves, including some that have been named var. rugelii (Pax) Rehd. (perhaps transitional to floridanum), may not be worthy of further segregation (Cr).
