This occurs in dry woods on acid soils of east-central states, from Appalachian to Ozarkian regions. The plant is avoided by browsing mammals. It is a powerful mint ("dittany") that can cause delayed allergic reactions in a few people, as discovered by JC after recommending a chew to field-trip participants (R. Dunlap, pers. comm.).
