This is concentrated on the Gulf Coastal Plain from Tex. to Flo. and upstream to s. Ark. (K). It occurs in various thinly wooded or weedy habitats. Since 1990, the species has also been found at scattered sites near the Mississippi or Ohio Rv. in Ill. and Ky. (Basinger 2003, SERNEC 2021). It is likely that the species has been dispersed by boats or other artificial means, and that only rare waifs are present at most sites. Within its main range, the species has become favored for planting and replacing turf-grases in mowed or trampled areas, since it spreads widely with stolons (Nuruddin & Chang 1999). In Ky. it has now been recorded from at least five counties: FULT (R. Mears, 31Jul 1994 at EKY); LAWR (R. Hughart+ 26 Jul 2003, at EKY); and JEFF (W.E. Thomas, 9 Sep 2018 at JEF); HICK (iNaturalist by K. Usher, 28 Jun 2020); and BALL (iNaturalist by TJMC, 20 Oct 2020). The FULT and LAWR colls. have been initially misidentified as microphylla. Presence in FULT has been confirmed by G. Burnett (pers. comm.) at the boat ramp in Hickman, where it has prospered in nearby mowed areas since 2010 or earlier.
