ALI: no HAB: 6,9,1, n/a, D?, 4? ABU: g10, s0, -6
This rhizomatous species with deeply cleft leaves (versus compound with petiolate segments in virginiana) is widespread in damp meadows and shores of northern regions, but it has largely disappeared from Ky. There are old records from FAYE (C.W. Short, PH, in 1840s "on Elkhorn near Lex[ington]"), BOON (Nelson 1919) and UNIO (BAYLU), plus a 1999 record from HARL (EKY, "Hemlock Branch Road, Medlin tract addition to Martin's Fork..."). There is also a doubtful recent record from HARD (cited in M). The coll. from UNIO was by H.T. Shacklette in 25 Apr 1937, "In rich alluvial woods near Rockford Bridge." It was overlooked until recently noted by V. Voelker (pers. comm. at NP); the record was absent from the thesis of Shacklette (1937). A. canadensis does survive in s. Ohio, s. Ind., and s. Ill., within 50 miles of Ky. at several sites, especially in the Wabash Rv. valley of sw. Ind. and se. Ill. (D, K, PL). The species is often used in wildflower gardens, but it is not known to have persisted in more naturalized areas.
