Caprifoliaceae Lonicera fragrantissima
Lonicera fragrantissima Lindl. & Paxton
ALI: AS HAB: n/a, n/a, D?, n/a ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This Chinese shrub with notoriously fragrant flowers has become common as a persistent planting or local escape across more southeastern states (K, W), where it is often semi-evergreen, retaining some green leaves through the winter even in Ky. The first record from Ky. may be the coll. of Mary Didlake from "Lexington" in FAYE (KY-Agr., KNK). The species is now widely planted across Ky., sometimes in abundance on roadsides, on college campuses or along corporate property boundaries, including some shopping centers and horse-farms. Several colls. of fragrantissima have been made from such sites (SERNEC), but these plants should not be regarded as naturalized. The species has been collected from assumed or reportedly "spontaneous" plants in FAYE (CW) and JEFF (APSC), but there is no definitive evidence of true naturalization in either case. The species certainly does not appear to be spreading widely over the landscape. For contrast, see notes on standishii, which is often confused.
