This is centered in Appalachian regions or nearby, with western extensions into some hills of the Interior Low Plateaus and Ozarks (F, FNA 9). In Ky. it is widely scattered on poorer soils than canadense and flowers later (mostly Jun-Jul versus May-Jun), but often confused and overlooked. It has smaller, pale or greenish yellow petals (versus white), 2-4 x 1-2 mm long (versus 5-9 x 2-4.5 mm). Larger stipules on robust plants are 1.5-5.5 x 1-1.5 cm (versus 1-2 x 0.5-1 cm) and coarsely toothed to lobed (versus subentire to toothed). Its leaves tend to be more coarsely toothed, with more obtuse apices. Terminal leaf lobes tend to be relatively large compared to the laterals (Y). Lower stems and petioles are relatively long-hirsute (versus smooth to sparsely short-hirsute).
