This diploid (2n = 26) is generally rare, known moslty from the Blue Ridge region plus scattered lowland sites from N.Car. to Ala. It differs from ecirrata in its leaves, which are less numerous (5-7 versus 8-13), narrower (l/w ca. 1.8-3 versus 1.4-1.7), glabrous and glaucous beneath (versus pubescent and green); also its lowest peduncles usually stem from leaf axils (versus bract axils). There is a disjunct coll. from WARR (NCU) determined by Mangaly (1968) as this species; see also FNA 26. While this record may be valid, a more thorough review of material that has been referred to ecirrata, hugeri or biltmoreana in Ky. is desirable before a definitive treatment for these taxa is adopted. S. biltmoreana remains unknown in Tenn.
