This occurs along rivers and streams on relatively well-drained fertile soils, mostly in mid-Atlantic to mid-western regions. It is rare to absent in much of the Appalachian region and on the southeastern Coastal Plain. Most colls. from Ky. (perhaps all) are referable to the relatively southwestern var. hispidula Gray, but that taxon is not recognized in recent treatments (FNA 23).
