Pyrola americana Sweet
ALI: no HAB: 11,5, n/a, A, 2 ABU: g10, s1, -4
This northeastern rhizomatous herb extends south into several counties of se. Ohio, s. W.Va. and w. Va., within 10-50 miles of the Ky. line. The only verified Ky. record is a coll. by B in HARL (US) during the 1930s: "rare, oak-chestnut forest of higher ridges of Black Mountain." That population has not been relocated. There is also an unverified report from POWE (Campbell et al. 1989); A. Cornett (pers. comm.) claimed to have seen 2 plants in a sandstone ravine just south of the Mountain Parkway east of Slade, but the site was later bulldozed. Several other disjunct northern plants are verified in the Red River Gorge of POWE and WOLF (e.g. Trientalis borealis).
