Crataegus marshallii Egglest.
ALI: no HAB: f-6,9,8,10, n/a, D?, 5 ABU: g9, s2, -3
This southeastern species is known from only two colls., in CALL (MUR) and MCRA (JC fo KY); both were from rights-of-way. These are about the most northern records in the Mississippi Valley (Phipps 1998; K). C. marshalii is the only member of series Apiifoliae, which is close to the Eurasian series Crataegus (FNA 9). Both series have leaves wth veins to all sinuses (versus only to deeper sinuses in series Cordatae and Microcarpae), and 1-3 seeds per fruit (versus 3-5). Characteristics of marshallii (FNA 9, W) include leaves with 3-7 lobes and relatiely narrow sinues, the proximal ones relatively deep; also finely serrate, relatively thin and dull; petiole hairy; sepals elongate.
