This is largely restricted to base-rich soils in mesic to subxeric woods of the upper midwest. but with curious linear extensions and disjunctions into Ky., W.Va, and Md. (K). In Ky. native plants are verified only from three localities in tributary ravines along the Palisades of the Kentucky Rv. (Jessamine Gorge, Shaker Creek, and opposite Mundys Landing). The limestones here are partly dolomitic, and the extensive populations in s. Ohio are on largely dolomitic soils (Braun 1967). T. nivale has also been reported from Otter Creek State Park in MEAD (C. Cornett, pers. comm. to F. Case), which is across the Ohio Rv. from a southern extension of its range in central Ind. along the Mississippian limestone (D, K). A small wild population was established by transplanting of M. Wharton from Jessamone Gorge in JESS to her "Flora Cliff" preserve in FAYE. Also, a small population was recently (2020) reported by L. Brewer from Boone County Cliffs in BOON (T. Littlefield, pers. comm.); however, this site was studied intensively during 1970 to 2000 by W.S. Bryant, a close friend of Wharton.
