This is widespread across east-central states, generally occuring in thin mesic to submesic woods on calcareous soils. It can even prosper with some mowing, as exemplified in some old (pre-1920) shady back yards of homes in Lexington (FAYE). Variation may need further study; 2n = 66 and 70 (FNA 23). Several colls. (FAYE, GREE, JESS, WOOD) from damp sites have relatively wide, deeper green leaves (mostly 2-4.8 mm versus 0.8-4 mm) and more red-purplish shoot bases, provoking confusion with timida; see notes under that name.
