In Ky. these plants were initially reported as S. uliginosa Nutt., based on colls. from the lower Rockcastle Rv. (where often associated with Eurybia saxicastellii) and the lower Laurel Rv. (Palmer-Ball et al. 1988). Similar plants have been found in Tenn. along the Obed Rv. in Morgan Co., Tenn. (D. Estes #8612 at BRIT, TENN) and at May Prairie in Coffee Co. (many colls. in SERNEC 2023), and perhaps Franklin Co. (K). There has been confusion among S. gracillima Torr. & Gray (mostly on the Coastal Plain), S. austrina (of Southern Appalachians,Piedmont and adjacent Coastal Plain), S. uliginosa Nutt. (of northern regions and south to the Blue Ridge), plus their relatives (Sm, FNA 19, W). The Ky. plants appear closest to austrina but further revision is needed (J. Semple, pers. comm.); see W for notes on characters. S. austrina is globally restricted and uncommon to rare, or perhaps locally frequent on the Piedmont from Ala. to N.Car. (W; SERNEC 2023).
