Liliaceae <Medeoloideae> Clintonia umbellulata
Clintonia umbellulata (Michx.) Morong
ALI: no HAB: 5,11,6, n/a, A, 1 ABU: g8, s8, -1
This is restricted to central and southern Appalachian regions, usually in mesic to subxeric woods on strongly acid soils. [Records from Macon Co. TN (K; SERNEC 2023) are from Macon Co. NC.] In Ky. umbellulata is concentrated in the central Cliff Section and in the Cumberland Mts. Although reported from further south on the Plateau, there are no colls. yet accessed. The species is somewhat variable in leaf shape, flower color and fruit color. Although fruits are generally described as black, blue fruits are known in Ky. (e.g. "terrikoontz" of 11Sep2021 at iNaturalist..org), and they may be prevalent in the Red River Gorge area (D. Dourson, pers. comm.). C. allegheniensis Harned was described from the Central Appalachians, but it has been interpreted as just a light blue-fruited variant of the generally dark blue to black-fruited umbellulata (W). Basal leaves of Clintonia in general can be confused with those of Galearis, which is often associated, but they differ as folllows (FNA 26): numbering 2-6 (versus 1-2); 18-30 x 4.5-8 cm (versus 9-20 x 2-10 cm); obovate to oblanceolate (versus elliptic, obovate or suborbicular); apex acute to acuminate (versus obtuse); thinly villous and dull (versus glabrous and glossy).
