This largely southern Appalachian taxon is combined with intricata by some authors. Variety status may be preferable. It is reported to have somewhat subglobose fruits (versus obovoid or oblong) with 2-3 seeds (versus 3-5), less deeply lobed leaves, and more robust thorns. Distinction from intricata can be difficult; the collection from MADI might be intermediate.
