This is widespread across eastern North America, but largely restricted to less disturbed wooded slopes on base-rich soils (often below slopes with laxiflora). Although it is clearly a distinct species (2n = 44), immature or incomplete colls. have often been misidentified as laxiflora or other relatives; see also notes under kraliana.
