This largely southern Appalachian taxon is generally less robust than typical laciniata, with less cleft leaves (or perhaps smaller lower leaves with relatively broad segments narrowed to more often distinct petiolules). It is reported to be usually sexual (versus apomictic), with a low chromosome number; 2n = 38 (FNA 21). F, G and Cr reported it from Ky., apparently based on: T.H. Kearney #324 (GH, NY), Aug 1893, "Poor Fork Post Office." More recently, MM collected and determined a plant from Buffalo Cr. in OWSL (for WKY) as this taxon. These colls. may match published descriptions of var. humilis, but there has been some inconsistency among recent treatments (e.g. Cr versus FNA 21). More southern plants known as var. digitata (Miller) Fiori have been combined with var. humilis by some authors but should probably be separated (W). Further work is needed in field and herbarium.
