This southeastern species is often mixed with dissectum, with no clear difference between typical habitats in Ky., although it is reportedly associated more with lowlands, and it is generally more frequent than dissectum on the Coastal Plain (Cranfill 1980; FNA 2; F, Ch+, Y, W). Although these two taxa appear closely related, definite hybrids have not been reported. Distinction from B. dissectum var. obliquum can be difficult (see above sources): sterile fronds are mostly 2-3 pinnate (versus 2-4), mostly remaining green through winter except along margins (versus often bronzing throughout); margins are sharply serrulate (versus entire to obscurely crenulate or serrulate). Pinnule shape may be useful, but attempts to describe differences have been confusing.
