Rosaceae <Potentilleae> Potentilla reptans
Potentilla reptans L.
ALI: EU HAB: F-9?, ::::, D?, 4? ABU: n/a, n/a, 4
This is scattered over northeastern regions, but unknown south of Ky. and Va. (W). See note under anglica, which may be confused; colls. deserve to be reviewed. Both species may also be casually confused with P. simplex or P. canadensis, and they are probably often overlooked. Non-flowering plants that are probably reptans were noted by JC during 2015 along roughly mowed woodland paths in FAYE (Tates Creek Golf Course) and HARR (main entrance fo Griffith Woods WMA). Based on FNA 9 and Clapham et al. (1962), P. reptans differs from simplex in having generally smaller leaves, with leaflets only 0.5-3 cm long (versus 2-8 cm); also, stipules of stem leaves are usually entire or rarely dentate (versus consistently lobed). Plants spread with stoloniform stems that root at nodes, forming new rosettes of leaves, as in simplex. But short rhizomes are also produced in simplex, and completely absent in reptans. P. reptans tends to have larger flowers, with petals mostly 8-12 mm long (versus 4-10 mm) and anthers 1.3-2 mm long (versus 0.6-1 mm).
