The status of this distinctly pubescent taxon needs further study. F treated it as a form. Isely (1998) indicated that it could have resulted from introgression of hirta into intermedia, and might include plants known as X nuttallii Darl. Plants that appear to be simple F1 hybrids (including X simulata MacKenzie & Bush) are more like hirta; these are not mapped here but have been reported from LEWI, MCRE, PULA and elsewhere (B, M).
