This is widespread in stagnant mesotrophic to eutrophic waters from North America to South America (FNA 22). Compared to brasiliensis, it is less concentrated in southeastern states and more in mid-western states (K). Variation deserves further study (2n = 30-70), as well as search for the closely related globosa.
