This is a distinct diploid of seasonally dry sandy soils in southeastern states. It is generally uncommon east of the Mississippi, where adventive status is suspected in some areas (W). In Ky. the species appears to be relatively conservative and associated with remnants of xeric to xerohydric grassy openings. This species should not be confused with O. glaucifolia W.L Wagner & Hoch of the southern Great Plains; = Gaura linifolia Nutt., Stenosiphon linifolia (Nutt.) Heynh.
