This perennial diploid (2n = 22) is widespread in mesic to subxeric woods across east-central states. There are records from ADAI, OWEN, WAYN and perhaps elsewhere that may be referred to the relatively northern var. hypomaculatum Fern. However, it is not clear if this variety is worth recognizing.
