This weedy annual (or short-lived perennial) is widespread on seasonally wet, base-rich soils across temperate regions of North America and Eurasia. It is particularly common in marshy fields, being relatively tolerant of grazing, nitrogen and salt. Plants of eastern North America have somewhat uncertain status but are probably native to the north (F, FNA 3; W).
