Populus heterophylla L.
ALI: no HAB: 3,6,9, ~?, E?, 5 ABU: g9, s8, -3
This is widely scattered across eastern states in disjunct areas: mostly on swampy sections of the Coastal Plain as far north as Conn., along the lower Ohio Rv. upstream to se Ohio (MCormac 1993), and on glacial plains in the southern Great Lakes region (Little 1971, PL). Further verification is needed in Ky. for some of the inland records. The overall similarity of this species' reported range to that of Fraxinus profunda is remarkable, although partly enhanced by an error in captions of McCormac (1993). Both species may be concentrated in landscapes that have an ancient history of swampiness but also considerable exposure to occasional droughts, often growing in peripheral sites rather than deeper wooded swamps. In Ky., both species are concentrated in or near the Coastal Plain and Shawnee Hills, extending upstream to the Louisville area (JEFF).
