Mapping here is highly provisional. These colls. are difficult to identify, and may include closely related species like C. margaretta Ashe (a diploid of north-central states) and C. sicca Sarg.(a possible hybrid with pruinosa in Mo. and Ohio); see FNA 9 for details. Also, the coll. from MCRE (at least) may be referable to C. mercerensis Sarg., which has been considered an Appalachian variety of C. chrysocarpa (W) or perhaps closer to C. dodgei Ashe, a triploid or tetraploid of the Great Lakes region (Lance 2014, FNA 9). Typical chrysocarpa is a widespread, variable tetraploid in northern and western regions that may not occur in Ky. (see also SC). The only species of series Rotundifolia reported from Ky. in FNA 9 is margaretta; and the series is virtually unknown south of Mo., Ky. and Va. (K, W). This series is close to series Intricatae but can be distnguished as follows (from varied sources): fruit red or rarely yellow (versus greenish to yellowish or orange-red), often becoming mellow (versus remaining hard and dry); calyx lobes triangular (versus lanceolate); inflorescence and foliage glandular or eglandular (versus conspicuously glandular on margins); leaves mostly obovate to suborbicular (versus ovate to elliptic), rounded to slightly acute at apex (versus acute to acuminate).:
