Variation and nomenclature needs to be checked. The coll. from HARD (NCU) appears to be the typical sexual diploid (2n = 28), A. neglecta. However, the colls. from BREC (KY), JEFF (DHL) and LAWR (Beyer & Stebbins 1987) may be the largely apomictic, non-staminate polyploid (2n = 56, 84), A. neodioica (including A. neglecta var. attenuata (Fern.) Cronq.). Cr treated the latter as A. neglecta var. neodioica (Greene) Cronq., but FNA 19 treated it as A. howellii Greene ssp. neodioica (Greene) Bayer. Both neglecta and neodioica are widespread in northern regions with no clear differences in habitat. Compared to plantaginifolia and parlinii, they have relatively narrow 1(3)-nerved leaves, mostly 0.5-1.5 cm wide (versus 3-5(7)-nerved, mostly 1.5-4 cm wide). FNA 19 stated: "Characteristic features of A. neglecta are its lashlike stolons that bear reduced leaves (except at the ends), flags on the distal cauline leaves, and basal leaves that are green-glabrescent with age". A. neodioica tends have later flowering (in late May-Jul versus late Apr-May), shorter stolons, and more petiolate basal leaves.
