This largely northeastern taxon has been called V. pallens, and sometimes combined as a segregate of the more western V. macloskeyi F. Lloyd. However, pallens was misapplied, being now synonymized with blanda (Ballard et al. 2023). Records of miniscula extend south into the Appalachians, mostly at higher elevation; it is absent from most of the Ohio Valley. There have been a few reports from Ky. but at least partly based on misidentifications of typical blanda (M). A coll. from BELL may be miniuscula: R.L. Thompson #90-240, "Fonde Surface-Mine... Highwall; rare" (BEREA).. Compared to blanda (F, W), miniuscula is reportedly a more northern diploid (2n = 24 versus 48) typical of somewhat hydric sites. It differs in its completely glabrous blades (versus with scattered small appressed hairs on upper surfaces, at least toward the base when young). Also, peduncles of pallens are usually longer than leaves and green (versus approximately equal to petioles, with both usually reddish or purplish). Its upper petals are typically less reflexed or twisted and broader; and its capsules are green (versus more or less purple).
