This largely midwestern species occurs mostly in the Mississippi Valley from La. to Ill. (K). It is somewhat adventive into northeastern states but it remains generally absent in Appalachian regions and on the southeastern Coastal Plain (W);. O pilosella is an octoploid segregate of the fruticosa complex (2n = 56).
